Studies have shown that it is less likely for women that are pregnant to have a unhealthy or premature baby if they get a flu vaccination while they are pregnant. When women are vaccinated against the flu studies have shown that babies are born larger and more healthy. There was a meeting in Philadelphia this past Thursday of the infectious Disease Society of America and the results were shared at this meeting. They hope that with the release of this new information that pregnant women will be more likely to get their flu shots as recommended.
The studies have proven that flu vaccines not only protect the woman, who are extremely susceptible to flu like symptoms when they are pregnant but the vaccines also protect the baby while in the womb and after birth. So what we are talking about here is one shot taking care of two people and the researchers hope that if pregnant women don’t want to take advantage of the vaccine for themselves that they will do if for their baby.
The studies show that if a pregnant woman gets a flu vaccination then the likelihood of her baby being born underweight and premature are much in her favor if she decides to go ahead with the vaccination. With the increasing spread of the H1N1 Swine Flu Pandemic and the release of these studies it is highly recommended for pregnant women to get the vaccination while they are pregnant.
